I’ve moved some of the content from here over, but I’ll keep this site live as long as possible to avoid breaking links (hello hackaday!)

My first [professionally produced] PCBs…
Just received my first batch of properly professionally made PCBs! They’re tiny. Everything looks OK, but no way to tell until I’ve stuck all the components on and programmed it… I knew it was going to be a bit fiddly soldering the bits on, but I was still a bit taken aback at how bloody tiny everything is.
Got the soldering iron out and had a go:
Doesn’t look too bad, but won’t have time to try testing and programming it (and then testing it again) ’til the weekend… Lots of potential for mistakes, short circuits etc.
Exciting, though. Funny to see my design in physical form. Makes me want to design loads more :)
(As for what this PCB is for - well, it’s a secret project at the moment, but as soon as I’m allowed, I’ll explain it a bit better)

Robotics an ting
Made a quick film for bike club…
Dodgy voice over, but it’s better than sticking a load of text narrative on the screen. Ought to put some credits on when I have a mo, but everything featured is from YouTube…

Cogs
Thought I’d try making some gears. The first one’s not so good - the mill bit’s first cut was too deep into the material, and the pressure was too much for it to follow the pattern closely. The next cuts were better but that first cut left a bit of a step on the edge of the teeth:
The next one was better. It’s better to start the mill well above the surface - “cutting air” - rather than risking the first cut being too deep:
Much cleaner.
